More than 325 years ago, when the parishes of Île d'Orléans were created in 1679, Sainte-Pétronille was part of the parish of Saint-Pierre. Sainte-Pétronille was officially founded as its own parish only in 1870. This change in name has not changed the history of this piece of island. In 1648, the French started to settle in the area. A few years later, the Hurons joined them before they permanently settled in Loretteville. Finally, just before the Plains of Abraham battle in 1759, General Wolfe decided to settle in the parish. From here, he had an unrestricted view on the Cap Diamant and on everything surrounding the island!
Throughout the years, Sainte-Pétronille drew the rich inhabitants of Québec City, most of them being from the English-speaking community. This part of the island thus became a vacation site more than a land devoted to agriculture. Nothing surprising in that, since the village offers so many astounding viewpoints. In only one glance, visitors can admire the city of Lévis, the Montmorency Falls and Old-Québec. The large cruise ships and cargo boats that sail to Québec City can also be seen on the south shore of this village. This parish deserves to be part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Québec Association.
