During your visit around the island, you can stop in each of the six churches located in the different villages. Each one has its own character even if they were almost all built during the same epoch. Their visit is fascinating, and they all present hidden treasures as well as impressive works of art.
The Sainte-Pétronille church was built in 1871 and is open to visitors from June 24 to Labour Day. Concerts are presented here during summer. Farther on the road, the Saint-Laurent church was built during the same years, in 1860. Guided visits are offered all summer from June to October. In Saint-Jean, the church was erected well before the other two, in 1734, and is now on the historical register.
At the very end of the island, the story of the Saint-François church is a little sadder. It was also built in 1734, but a fire destroyed it in 1988. Fortunately, the church was rebuilt in 1992. It is open to visitors from June to October. The Sainte-Famille church was built in 1748 and it is the only one in the province of Quebec to have three bell-towers on its facade. It is open from June to October and nearby, you can also visit a procession chapel entirely built of stone.
Finally, the Saint-Pierre church, the oldest on the island, was erected from 1717 to 1719. It is on the historical register since 1954, the year when it was closed to worship. In the sacristy, you can observe works of art by artists from the island. The church is open to visitors from May to October.
