Saint-Jean

Accessible year round

From the French Regime

Founded in 1679, Saint-Jean is one of the six parishes on the Île d'Orléans. In this village, there are still some buildings dating back to the 18th century (some houses, a cemetery and a church) that give the parish its important cultural and religious heritage. In the heart of the village, the most beautiful example of a house from the French Regime stands from all its height. In fact, the Manoir Mauvide-Genest, now transformed into an interpretation centre on the history of the French Regime, is a seigniorial manor dating back to 1734. It is one of the oldest manors of its epoch to be still standing in Quebec. Also built in 1734, the Saint-Jean Church is also an example of the religious architecture of the French Regime. In the distance, its red roof allows visitors to recognize it from the other buildings on the island. Because of its age, its preservation and its interior decoration, the church was classified historical monument in 1957. All this history, heritage and the unrestricted view the inhabitants have on the river, contributed to put the village on the list of the Most Beautiful Villages of Québec Association.

With its experience, Saint-Jean stands out because of its agricultural lands. There are some dairy farms as well as some fruit and vegetable farms. The Île d'Orléans, but mainly the parish of Saint-Jean, abounds with maple products, fresh vegetables, as well as strawberries and raspberries. In summer, visitors are invited to pick their own. While you are at it, stop by the boutiques and art galleries to discover some of the local talents.
