Québec (Vieux-Québec)
So Much to See
Québec City is one of the oldest cities in North America. Throughout the centuries, it preserved its European look, which is unique on the continent. One of the most important attractions to visit is the one that gives the city its historical style: the Fortifications of Québec National historic Site of Canada. This imposing wall circles the city for about 4.6 kilometres. You can walk on the top of these walls and doors and read the interpretation panels, which will help you understand this defensive system.
You can also go on a guided visit from the Dufferin Terrace to reach the Poudrière de l’Esplanade, one of the few powder magazines that still exist in Quebec and the only one that has been completely restored. The Citadelle of Québec/The Royal 22e Regiment Museum is another major attraction. On the top of Cap Diamant, the Citadelle constitutes one side of the Fortifications.
If you want to learn more about the religious heritage of the city, visit the Chapelle des Jésuites and the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, which are located on Dauphine and Cook streets respectively. Inside these two buildings, you will find precious works of art. Farther on rue d’Auteuil, stop at the Artillery Park Heritage Site where the British royal artillery regiment established its headquarters until 1871. Costumed characters welcome you, and from July to September, gunfire demonstrations take place every day.
In the middle of the public place, facing the City Hall, the Basilica-Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Québec houses numerous works of art, like a canopy, stained-glass windows, paintings and sculptures. It is also in the crypt of this religious building that four of the New-France governors and most of the bishops of Québec City are buried. From May to October, you can attend the sound and light show “Feux Sacré” in the basilica.
In Côte de la Fabrique, stop at the Musée de l’Amérique française. The oldest museum in Canada invites you to relive the great adventure of the French-speaking community in America. A little farther, you can stop at the parc Montmorency (not to be mistaken with the parc de la Chute-Montmorency in Beauport) where you can admire the different statues and canons that have been installed there, as well as the magnificent surrounding scenery.
If you wish to learn more about the fantastic history of Québec City, visit the Musée du Fort, located close to the Place d’Armes. This museum presents a historic reconstitution of the six sieges that Québec City underwent, as well as the famous battle of the Plains of Abraham.
Do not miss the most-photographed hotel in the world, the Château Frontenac, which dominates Québec City from the top of Cap Diamant. Inaugurated in 1893, this majestic hotel will undoubtedly charm you. At its feet, the Dufferin Terrace offers an exceptional view on the South Shore and the city of Lévis. At the western end of the terrace, you will find the Promenade des Gouverneurs, which runs along the Citadelle and leads to the Battlefields Park.
Opposite Château Frontenac and rue St-Louis is the Place d’Armes, which used to be the place where took place military parades centuries ago. From there, you can walk to du Trésor Street where several artists present their works for the joy of passers-by in summer. Down on Donnacona Street, the Musée des Ursulines, built in 1836, presents the permanent exhibition “Les Ursulines en Nouvelle-France : Mission et Passion”. On the premises, you can visit the Ursulines monastery and chapel.
