L'Ancienne-Lorette

A City That Remained Young

Since January 2006, L’Ancienne-Lorette is no longer part of the new Québec City. At the time of the merging of the municipalities in 2002, it became part of the new Québec City, but its citizens decided to separate from it. The city received its name thanks to Pierre Chaumonot. This priest, who miraculously healed during a journey at the Loreto sanctuary in Italy, honoured this place by giving the city its name. From the name Lorette, the municipality then became L’Ancienne-Lorette in 1967 when the Hurons decided to leave and formed the Jeune-Lorette.

Nowadays, the territory of L’Ancienne-Lorette is completely surrounded by the new Québec City and presents some tourist attractions you will not want to miss. The Théâtre La Fenière, of course, is worth visiting. This barn, built in 1858, welcomes theatre lovers year round and is the fourth largest theatre in Québec! During the Holiday Seasons, come visit the Centre Jardin Hamel. You will discover the largest Christmas decoration centre in the country! In spring, this garden centre transforms to welcome the event Papillons en fête during which hundreds of butterflies await you to observe them.
