Saint-Joachim was the first colonization site on the east end of Côte-de-Beaupré. As soon as 1626, Champlain ordered the construction of houses and barns meant for an agro-pastoral production to feed the population of Québec City.
If you enter Saint-Joachim from the Grande-Rivière sector, the ingenuity in the locations chosen for the houses of the first settlers is immediately apparent. They are located according to high winds, tides and the difficult water supply, which are the climatic conditions that are typical of the Cap Tourmente region.
At the Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area, you can do plenty activities on the ground as well as ornithological activities. This park is a migratory stop for the famous snow geese that come back to rest in spring and fall. In October, the Festival de l’Oie Blanche is an event you won’t want to miss if you are interested in bird watching.
Also stop at the Saint-Joachim Church, one of the oldest ones in Quebec. Its architecture and works of art will certainly please you. On your way to cap Tourmente, you will see the Centre d’initiation au patrimoine – La Grande Ferme, an enchanting site that offers shelter to a 100-year-old house as well as the archaeological remnants of the first church of the village, destroyed by the British. In summertime, you can visit the exhibition “La Tourmente de l’Estuaire”, which recalls the importance of the St. Lawrence River and the life of the ancestors who lived in the area.
